What is Fair Trade?

Everything seems to have a conscience these days – even companies. Well, not all companies. But some companies are trying to make sure they are playing fair with the artisans and the crafts makers with whom they work. By turning to fair trade practices, these companies can not only gloat about being better than everyone else, but they can also feel good about helping people who might not be in the best of economic conditions. There are a number of benefits to fair trade practices, and perhaps more companies will get on board when they realize that they can win too.

Fair Prices for Products

When a company wants to buy a number of items from a smaller artisan, in order to qualify as a fair trade exchange, the artisan must be paid a reasonable price. This price should be based on what a fair living wage for the area is, as well as for what the product cost to make. This will allow the artisan to benefit from the exchange and it will allow them to continue to work in fair conditions or to continue making the items they are making. If a person isn’t paid fairly, they’re not going to be able to support themselves on their wages. Fair prices will vary, depending on the cost of living in some areas.

Investing in Other Communities

Fair trade practices allow companies to invest in other countries and communities. While this might not seem like a big deal to the companies, artisans from smaller countries who can not get high paying work will find the arrangements with fair trade companies to be more than sufficient. The community as a whole will benefit since the person making the money is going to be able to spend that money in other areas of the community. The community will then be able to make improvements to their city and surrounding areas, building a stronger community that can support itself easily.

Sustainable Environment Practices

A fair trade agreement will also encourage the artisans and manufacturers to practice sustainable production. When they are not damaging the natural resource populations in their community, they will be able to continue to make the items that are being bought from them. Learning how to continue the wealth of the natural resources allows for long-term economy stability and more investments coming into the community in the future. The workers are encouraged to learn how to use resources in a sustainable way, conserving what they can while still having high quality products.

Fair trade allows people to be treated fairly for the work that they do. Much in the same what the labor unions are setup in America to help workers have the best working conditions and wages, these fair trade agreements will help those who are buying products to sustain and to support other communities. In the long run, everyone wins.
